Brewster MA
Cape Cod is shaped much like an arm being flexed, and Brewster is the “muscle”
in that arm. Residents refer to Brewster as the Sea Captain’s Town for
its deep heritage with the sea.
Many mansions belonging to sea captains have been carefully maintained and
some are currently open as bed and breakfasts. The community is proud of its
history, dating back to the initial settlement in 1659, though it was not incorporated
as its own township until 1803. Many steps have been taken to preserve the area,
including the purchase by the town of approximately 850 acres of land to preserve
open spaces and water quality.
With over twenty-three square miles making up the town’s area, more than
325 acres are beach and marshland. Brewster offers two nationally known golf
courses and Nickerson State Park has hundreds of acres for outdoor recreation
including biking, campgrounds, swimming, boating and fishing.
The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History allows visitors to wander through on
their own or take part in guided tours. Either way plan for at least two hours
to see all that it has to offer.
The Cape Cod Repertory Theatre Company puts on wonderful and sometimes interactive
productions for children along with their regular schedule of original works
and classic plays.
There is a wide variety of shopping in Brewster, including many eclectic stores
featuring handcrafted items, blown glass, antique furniture, books and china.
The Satucket Farm Stand entices visitors with fresh produce and herbs grown
right there on their land, bakery items and flowers for sale.
Along with the Museum of Natural History, there are many other museums designed
to inform the public about the town. In an original 1930’s house, the
Brewster Historical Society Museum includes a sea captain’s room with
original paintings and personal items.
There is also a museum dedicated to firefighters of New England that boasts
the only remaining 1929 Mercedes Benz fire engine and Arthur Fiedler’s
(of Boston Pops fame) personal collection of fire-fighting memorabilia. If you
like a little history with your water sports and relaxation, Brewster is the
place for you.
